Summary Activities will be conducted in four pilot districts: Kem, Belomorsk, Pryazha and Olonets. Regarding the laboratory diagnostics the III phase aims at creating a functioning laboratory network in the Republic of Karelia, in which sputum smears are examined only in one laboratory per district and sputum cultures and drug susceptibility tests are concentrated in the Central TB Laboratory in Petrozavodsk. Regarding the cooperation between the PHC and the specialised TB sector the objective is to improve TB case detection rate in the PHC institutions and involve the PHC more closely to directly observed treatment (DOT) in continuation phase of TB treatment. Key measures: Regarding the laboratory sector, training will be provided for both the personnel at the Petrozavodsk Central TB Laboratory and microscopic laboratories in the districts. Quality assurance system of district microscopic laboratories will be further developed. Finnish and Karelian experts will make supervisory visits especially to the four pilot districts and also training events will be organised in the districts for PHC personnel on TB diagnostics and treatment.
Background The project contributes to the prevention of the spread of infectious diseases within the Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Well-being. Improved cooperation provides also modern knowledge of TB and TB control, which is applicable to Finland.
Objectives The III phase of the project has the overall objective of reducing incidence of tuberculosis (TB) and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR) in the Republic of Karelia.
