Summary 1. Workshop in Murmansk on healthy nutrition for women and their families in Murmansk, a workshop (similar to the one carried out in Archangel in October 1998 (report available on request), will be carried out to raise awareness and provide the opportunity for health care professionals (paediatricians, obstetricians and hygienists) and the local authorities in Murmansk to appreciate that their understanding of nutrition can be greatly improved. Success indicator: New knowledge of health professionals demonstrated by evaluation of the workshop and report of the workshop. 2. Follow-up Food and Nutrition Policy Workshop in Archangel. Building on the workshop in Archangel in October 1998 (report available on request), it is proposed to carry out a follow-up meeting in Archangel. The aim of this workshop is to develop a Food and Nutrition policy for women and children living in the Archangel Region. Success indicator: Report of workshop and first draft of Regional food and nutrition policy for Archangel. 3. Nutrition consultants to advise on policy development in the Region. Consultants, experts on nutrition policy, will assist authorities in Archangel and Murmansk to draw up drafts of a regional nutrition policy for women and children. Success indicator: First draft of policy for women and children.

Objectives To reduce levels of mortality and morbidity, especially through reducing the risk of: infection by strengthening immunity; food-borne communicable disease; and non-communicable diseases by developing Regional Food and Nutrition policies for women and their children in NW Russia. The purpose of this project is to ensure access to safe, nutritious variety of food and to provide a nutrition education strategy for women and their children

Stimulate the development of democracy and civil society through developing more open collaboration between different sectors, governmental, private and voluntary. 3. Increase participation by civil society by improving their access to public information.
