Objectives The aim of this project is to decrease the defaulter rate for strengthening the DOTS implementation and for preventing further development of the drug resistance.

This project is planned for two years. It will consist of several stages. The first stage includes social support for 200 TB patients in Arkhangelsk city and for 260 MDR-TB patients in the oblast per year. There is a need for additional funding to strengthen the patients' motivation to adhere to the treatment and to increase motivation of the PHC stuff to organize observed treatment.

The second stage will include the evaluation of the impact of this pilot project to the defaulter rate. The evaluation will help to develop and to implement sustainable system for providing DOT in the oblast. The plan is that the oblast/district/rayon authorities will take over the funding of these activities for addressing the defaulter rate within the NTP in Arkhangelsk oblast.
