Summary The proposed project's effort is targeted at improving expertise among relevant healthcare professionals working at women's clinics and maternity houses, improving awareness of women about HIV-related risks, improving networking among women's clinics, maternity houses and the AIDS Centre, and improving the capacity of involved institutions in HIV prevention work. The project will enable to keep the HIV problem high on the regional agenda.
Background The HIV situation remains to be aggravating in the Republic of Karelia, which causes big concerns. The epidemic increasingly covers women of reproductive age, which, in its turn, leads to more risks of mother-to-child transmission of HIV-infection and broader heterosexual transmission of HIV.
Objectives The overall objective of the project is to contribute to HIV reduction in Karelia among women of reproductive age. Purpose: Capacity of healthcare workers from the midwifery and gynecological service (women's clinics and maternity houses) of Petrozavodsk City in terms of HIV prevention, diagnostics and case management, improved.
Specific objectives/indicators no data
Results 1. Competence of healthcare workers from Petrozavodsk City women's clinics and maternity houses is increased in terms of HIV diagnostics, case management and, especially, prevention. 2. HIV-related awareness of clients of women's clinics and maternity houses of Petrozavodsk City has risen 3. New preventive activities and methods tested and introduced 4. Networking among women's clinics, maternity houses and Karelian AIDS Centre has improved. 5. Best practices, models and products of the project are disseminated to other areas of The Republic of Karelia with support from regional healthcare authorities
