Background no data
Objectives Increasing resistance to antibiotics (ABR) is a worldwide concern. Recently new antibiotics have been introduced in the Russian Federation and Arkhangelsk county has a significant exchange of travelers with neighbouring countries. Despite these factors, few data exist on ABR from NW Russia. A national surveillance programme (NORM) for ABR, with quantitative data at Dept of Microbiol, U of N Norway, -located in Tromsø-, has started, comprising many microbiological laboratories of Norway. Since the prevalence & ABR of clinically significant bacteria in NW Russia is not well characterized, we intend to assist in building a microbiology laboratory, in order to obtain data on ABR. The planned laboratory at an infectious disease clinic in Arkhangelsk would help patients, and it would contribute for improved decision making in antibiotic policy, probably for the whole county.
