Summary The project aims to improve measures for providing more and better assistance to young people/children (and their families) at risk of social and health consequences including the use of alcohol and drugs, and to raise awareness of problems and increase people’s knowledge about their rights to care and assistance (incl. legal counselling).
Background The project is part of the Northern Dimension Partnership on Health and Social Well-being, which will be implemented in close collaboration with the Partnership’s “SIHLWA” Expert Group. Also the Nordic Council of Ministers has allocated funds for the projects.
Objectives Long term objectives:
(1) To reduce alcohol and substance abuse in general and hazardous use in particular, and alcohol’s long-term injurious effect on young people’s health.
(2) To change a general misconception in the society underestimating the negative impact of alcohol and drugs on the health and well-being of individuals and to public health in general.
(3) To help decrease risk-behaviour of young people and guide them towards a responsible, sustainable relationship with alcohol, and towards abstinence vis-à-vis drugs.
Specific objectives/indicators no data
Results Key measures in 2008:
1. A stakeholder analysis of agencies and actors aiming to tackle alcohol/drug problems among adolescents and children.
2. In collaboration with Youth and Children Health Promoting projects and programmes, estimation of the efficiency and productivity of actions directed at the healthy lifestyles of children and teenagers.
3. Media seminar for journalists.
4. A seminar for local politicians to help them better understand the seriousness of the problem and their fundamental role in solving it.
