Summary The goal of this project is to strengthen health promotion activities and policies aiming to prevent chronic diseases in the Karelian Republic by utilising the existing research data and results. In addition, the project aims to forward knowledge on the local public health situation and its determinants to the population and to build capacities of the local experts in health communication.

Objectives The project will:
(1) in collaboration with local experts process and disseminate information obtained from studies in the Republic of Karelia,
(2) interpret the results together with local decision-makers and health experts in order to promote evidence based decision making concerning health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

Key measures:
(1) three seminars for public health experts in the mass media and NGOs, the seminars include workshops for local decision-makers,
(2) conferences and exhibitions including targeted and effective health communication, such as the Medical conference of Karelia in 2008 and 2010, and health exhibition (Terveysmessut),
(3) a Russian language information package designed, compiled and tested in collaboration with local experts, containing information on health, life style and the underlying factors affecting these, and including an internet page, overheads, reports and leaflets,
(4) guidelines for health communication, targeted to local experts.
